Great to see cash-spiel comeback

One of the really strong sports events every fall used to be the Grand Prix of Curling. A terrific cash-spiel at the Port Arthur Club, which in its time saw some of the country's best curlers competing here.

Sadly, the event went by the way-side several years back, leaving a significant hole in the November sports calendar, but a more significant void in the competitive circle for the city and region's top curlers.

Hats off to the all those involved in the recently completed Courtesy Freight spiel at the Port Arthur Club. Although much smaller in scope to the former Grand Prix, it did give the best men's and women's teams a chance to test their mettle against others. This event was also unique as it had men and women going rock to rock, and as could have been expected, the Krista chance rink fared well.

Some great games were showcased over the four days at the Port Arthur club, and in the end it was Bryan Burgess taking home the title with a 9-8 win over Sault Ste. Marie's Al Belec.

Hopefully, the organizing team will try to expand the field and perhaps this event might be able to take its place alongside the former Grand Prix in the next few years.
